The Defender (SJ) Personality Types

“I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.”
– George Washington, ISTJ

The Defender is a beacon of stability and loyalty in the swirling chaos of the modern day world. They are driven by a strong sense of responsibility, dependability, and justice. They believe in being hard-working and honest, and are some of the people you can truly depend on to keep their words. Defenders long for security and stability in their lives, and try to give these same comforts to others. Defenders have a strong sense of right and wrong, and will stand up for their beliefs regardless of the opposition they may face. They believe in law and order and upholding traditions they believe in. Familiarity and consistency help them to feel at home in the world, and they try their very hardest to be a stabilizing force in the lives of their loved ones. Defenders are to be respected for the dedication and care they provide in practical ways to those around them.

Which Personality Types Are The Defenders?

Defenders are identified by the SJ in their type title. They include ISFJs, ISTJs, ESFJs, and ESTJs. They are extremely aware of their inner body  sensations; feelings like hunger, thirst, illness, and pleasure. Defenders live in a practical way, and are often described as down-to-earth. They like to understand the world in a concrete, realistic way and strive to be level-headed in everything they do. The “J” in their type title determines how they live in the outer world. They prefer to have things organized and structured. They like to plan ahead and know what to expect, and are prone to keeping detailed to-do lists of all their projects and deadlines. Andrew Carnegie (ESFJ), Mother Teresa (ISFJ), Tom Clancy (ESTJ), and Warren Buffett (ISTJ) are all examples of renowned Defenders.

Defender Strengths and Positive Core Traits

Defenders are people of action who believe in practically solving the problems that come up from day-to-day. They like to be prepared for the future, but they also like to draw lessons from the past. Defenders have a keen respect for history and love learning methods that have been used in times gone by. Many Defenders enjoy taking up age-old pastimes like quilting, candle-making, or historical crafts; this gives them a feeling of harmony with the past and they enjoy this. They also prefer using the “tried and true” technique when solving problems.

“Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers. It may not be difficult to store up in the mind a vast quantity of facts within a comparatively short time, but the ability to form judgments requires the severe discipline of hard work and the tempering heat of experience and maturity.”
– Calvin Coolidge, an ISTJ

Defenders have a vivid eye for details, and often have lush memories of past events and experiences. They enjoy annual celebrations that help them to celebrate and commemorate family, holidays and pastimes. They love to be involved and close-knit with their families and communities.

“Love begins by taking care of the closest ones – the ones at home.”
– Mother Teresa, ISFJ

Defenders are naturally responsible, and believe in fulfilling their obligations and plans to the best of their abilities. They believe in being consistent, dependable, sensible, and thorough in all their endeavors. They combine a rich eye for detail and past experience with a grounded, realistic attitude towards life.

“Are you participating in making your community a better place? … You have to become involved in your community. In every way that you can, better your community…That is your obligation.”
– Sonia Sotomayor, ESTJ

Defenders will vary depending on their preference for thinking or feeling. The STJ Defenders value objective logic and prize rational thought. They try to step out of situations when making a decision to analyze all the pros and cons, what makes the most sense, and what the facts are. They have a realistic, practical approach to logic and try to analyze things in terms of what option will best solve the problem at hand. They care less for theoretical logic or debating about things that they see as having no practical application at the moment. STJs enjoy solving problems in their communities, and providing hands-on assistance to those that need it. Selflessness is a core trait of healthy, balanced SJ types.

STJ Defenders are excellent at handling logistics; in fact, psychiatrist David Keirsey, believes that Defenders have the strongest logistical intelligence of any of the personality types. Where thinking Defenders are excellent at organizing systems and programs efficiently, feeling Defenders are excellent at organizing social events and communities effectively so that all people feel a sense of harmony and belonging.

Feeling Defenders have a practical sense of kindness and compassion that makes them great in nurturing roles. They are the people that will bring you a meal if you are sick, or provide gentle guidance and hands-on help. They believe the best way to show care for someone is through providing utilitarian assistance. Acts of service and generosity are often the ways that they show loyalty to their families and communities. When it comes to making decisions, SFJ types will try to step into the situation and empathize with the people involved. They will try to determine how their decisions will affect the overall harmony of the group, and the emotions and well-being of the people involved. SFJ types love to be part of a community and do what they can to serve others and live life as generously as possible.

“I love the idea of being completely devoted to service with zero vanity.”
– Anne Hathaway, ESFJ
