The Myers-Briggs® Types of The Promised Neverland Characters

The Promised Neverland is one of my all-time favorite animes. Filled with complex characters and gorgeous visuals, it seamlessly blends drama, action, and mystery into an edge-of-your-seat series that you want to finish in one sitting! As I watched the show, I enjoyed seeing the personality dynamics of the many different characters.

For those who haven’t seen the show, The Promised Neverland centers around a group of children who live as orphans in Grace Field House. They lead a happy existence, content to play tag, help out in the kitchen, and cuddle with their “Mom,” Isabella. When one of the orphans departs to move in with a family, Emma and Norman run after her because she had forgotten her favorite stuffed animal. As they catch up to where their sibling had been, they realize that there’s a terrifying, evil secret behind the orphanage’s existence and they must do whatever they can to escape.

The Myers-Briggs® Types of the Promised Neverland Characters

Mom (Isabella) – ENFJ

“I wish I could have just loved them normally.” – Isabella

Nurturing and insightful, Mom has a way of sensing what’s going on with her children psychologically without it having to be verbalized. While at first she appears as a villain, later in the series we realize that there’s a good side of her warring with the restrictions and limits of the world she’s been confined to. She tries to make the best of the situation she’s been given, and eventually taps into her intuition and her interpersonal intelligence to create a strategy that surprises everyone, children and demons alike. Will she end up good or side with the bad guys? You’ll have to finish the series to find out.

Sister Krone – ENTP

“You brats better escape. You’re good at playing tag, right? Run…and run…and survive. Then destroy this damned world we live in!” – Sister Krone

Cunning and energetic, Sister Krone does whatever it takes to survive in an oppressive and cruel world. She has no problem manipulating others, lying, and intimidating in order to pull through and enjoy some beauty in her life. Her ability to spot possibilities, forge creative plans and think outside the box make her an excellent example of an ENTP who’s stuck in an impossible and desolate situation.

Peter Ratri – ENTJ

“Whatever you do, you can’t get away. You cattle children are a necessity for this world.” – Peter Ratri

Strategic and commanding, Peter Ratri demonstrates some of the greatest strengths of the ENTJ. That said, he’s also a narcissist, so when we type him we want to extract all the “evil” from his personality, and look purely at his cognitive strengths and weaknesses (as much as possible). Ratri has an eye for the big picture and can easily formulate complex plans in order to reach a long-term goal. He’s also highly rational, albeit using his rationality for the wrong ends. Like many ENTJs, he has charisma and leadership strength, as he’s able to handle the logistics and negotiations involved in managing humans and demons and farms. While he is indeed a villain, he’s a good example of the intellectual strengths of the ENTJ type.

Sonju – ISTP

“Don’t worry about it, you were right to be cautious. Most demons would start drooling and take a bite if they saw a human. So it’s better to regard all of them as your enemy. I only saved you out of curiosity. It’s been a while since we talked to humans like this.” – Sonju

Intelligent and observant, Sonju is gifted at sizing up situations on the spot in order to protect himself and others. Like most STPs, he thinks quickly on his feet, coming up with tactical plans at the last minute that stump his enemies. Unlike Mujika, he stays emotionally disconnected from the situations he’s in, while still thoughtfully analyzing them. His observant nature is true to the ISTP’s way of staying in the background and seeing everything that others miss. He’s curious about humans and is a skilled teacher, but he’s also autonomous and doesn’t seem to subscribe to any particular set of rules other than his own.

Mujika – XNFJ

“Before meeting you, I’ve never spoken or even seen humans before. You’re not enemies or food. You’re different from other living things. I’m glad I met you all had a chance to talk. I’m glad we became friends.” – Mujika

It’s fairly difficult to tell in both the Manga and the television series whether Mujika is INFJ or ENFJ. There doesn’t seem to be enough information to go on in that respect. That said, she shows the insight and emotional reading abilities that most NFJs possess. She’s deeply concerned with how others are feeling and can quickly change her mind about things when she understands how others will be affected. She likes having a plan, knowing what to expect, and she often gets lost in existential musings about why she’s alive and what her meaning is in the overall scheme of things. I’d be more inclined to think INFJ for her than ENFJ, because her introverted thinking doesn’t seem inferior, but I’m still not 100% certain based on the limited information on her character.

Lannion – ESTP

“You take your eyes off Ray for a second, and he’s already getting himself killed.” – Lannion

Resourceful and impulsive, Lannion does what it takes to help his siblings and make life exciting. Like most young ESTPs, he longs for adventure and tries to find ways to amp up the energy of everything around him. Also like most ESTPs, he can be overly blunt and straightforward without taking into account how his words will emotionally impact people. His resourcefulness with concrete objects enables him to create a water-bottle rope device that helps the orphans escape from Grace Field House. Overall, he’s an excellent example of an ESTP child.

Barbara – ESFP

I wish there were more written about Barbara, as she’s a very interesting and passionate character. She appears to be quick on her feet and driven by her idea of what’s right. She’s highly observant and also insightful about others, speculating that Emma and Ray are against Norman’s plan to destroy the demons. She can be commanding and logical, but all of her plans have to coincide with strong, deeply-felt values that are only her own.

Gilda – ISFJ

“I’ve wanted to say this since yesterday, I can’t hold it in anymore. If you’re not feeling well, you gotta tell us immediately! Listen, don’t keep going until you faint ever again, all right? Got it? You’re always too reckless!! It’s fine to be brave, but there’s no point if you die!” – Gilda

Reliable and mature, Gilda nurtures and cares for her siblings with an attention to detail that is second to none. Like most ISFJs, she’s cautious and gentle but can become surprisingly fierce when someone she loves is in danger. She can be especially intimidating when she’s confronting Emma about not taking care of herself and being too reckless. Gilda’s thoughtful, practical nature is a much-needed element in the children’s escape from Grace Field House.

Don – ESFP

“Emma and Norman, you both tried to trick us and take us out into a world full of enemies? You’re kidding me! Are we that much of a burden? Are we that weak and useless to us that you feel the need to protect us? That time, when you asked us to help you, I thought you were relying on us. Was that a lie? We’re not as smart as you three. We’re not, but still aren’t we family? Aren’t we siblings? I just want you to have a little faith in us!” – Don

Energetic and caring, Don will do whatever it takes to keep his younger siblings safe at Grace Field House and beyond. While he can sometimes be too reckless and impulsive, his heart is in the right place as he struggles to contain his growing feelings of helplessness and despair in the first season. More than anything, he wants his family to be safe and he wants there to be no secrets between him and Emma, Norman, and Ray. As the series progresses, we see Don become more in touch with his intuition and thinking sides – thinking of the long-term implications and taking charge and leading in difficult situations.

Norman – INFJ

Norman the INFJ

“I won’t let us cattle shed any more blood. But this is neither arrogance nor self-indulgence. It’s resolve.” – Norman

Norman captures the strategic, long-range thinking of the INFJ as well as the quintessential INFJ empathy and “others first” focus. No matter how hard things get, Norman focuses on the welfare of the people around him rather than his own comfort. He’s able to outsmart nearly any opponent because of the complex, far-reaching plans he devises in his mind. Throughout the series we see him struggle with his desire for harmony and pleasing his siblings, and his need to stay true to his vision and long-term agendas.

Emma – ENFJ

“We’re family that grew up together. Even if that person gets in the way, betrays us, or says I’m naïve, I want to believe in that person!” – Emma

Nearly everything Emma does is fueled by a deep and unrestrained love for others. Nobody can stop her from believing in her dream of rescuing every orphan from Grace Field House. In typical ENFJ fashion, she is normally kind-spirited and gentle unless someone threatens a loved one, in which case she becomes forceful and intimidating. Emma’s altruism, sympathy, and idealism guide her in every choice she makes. Like a typical ENFJ, she mentors and inspires others towards her vision. She connects easily and empathetically with others and gives the people around her a sense of purpose and potential.

Ray – INTJ

“Isn’t this the greatest? The perfect corer with the set shipment date will burn up. She won’t be able to abandon me. I’ve been waiting for this day. I decided this a long time ago. Many, many years ago. It’s a childish retaliation…I endured it, and I worked hard to improve my value to the highest it could be. Twelve years. I’m a feast that they’ve been waiting for. I’m going to take that away from them tonight. Right before the harvest they’ve been looking forward to.” – Ray

Sullen yet insightful, Ray understands the true nature of Grace Field House before any of the other students are able to. In typical INTJ fashion, Ray considers it a kindness to be blunt and straightforward, especially in the first season. He has little patience for silliness or the emotional sensitivities of the other children. His forward-thinking, strategic mind is fully on display as he creates a six-year secret plan to make sure that two of his closest friends are able to find freedom. In the second season of Promised Neverland, we see Ray become more in touch with his feeling side. He’s able to see the importance of considering others’ feelings and even takes time to let Emma vent her feelings and emotions in order to prevent them becoming a problem later on.

    1. When I do these articles I can’t always find a character of each type because sometimes they aren’t clear enough so there isn’t a character of each type. In this particular series I couldn’t find characters with several types (ISTJ, INFP, ESTJ). That’s why it’s called “The Myers-Briggs Types of the Promised Neverland Characters” instead of “Which Promised Neverland Character Has Your Personality Type.” I’d love it if all 16 personalities were represented in each show, but sometimes unfortunately it’s not the case. Thanks for reaching out though. I don’t like to make any type feel left out!

  1. Why you think that Emma is an ENFJ character? I thought that she’s ENFP! Maybe Emma has J sign in herself but P is more!😐💔
