Elphaba Thropp – INTJ
Elphaba’s story is a textbook case of the INTJ journey—filled with insight, rebellion, and the pursuit of a vision in the face of alienation. Born with green skin and instantly othered by society, she grows up ostracized and burdened with the impossible task of earning her father’s approval while protecting her disabled sister, Nessarose. (Ever had a group project where you did all the work but got none of the credit? That’s Elphaba’s whole life.)
This outsider status fuels her drive to challenge injustice, especially the systemic oppression faced by Animals in Oz.
She doesn’t just dream of a better world; she calculates how to create one. And while her methods may brand her as “wicked,” her intent is anything but. Let’s dive deeper into why Elphaba embodies the INTJ.
1. Strategic and Visionary Thinking (Introverted Intuition – Ni)
Elphaba doesn’t just see the cracks in the system—she maps out how to fix them. Her Ni fuels her ability to spot patterns, discern the deeper implications of the Wizard’s rule, and connect ideas that others overlook. For her, the oppression of Animals isn’t just an isolated problem; it’s a symptom of a corrupt, overarching system.
Unlike her classmates at Shiz University, who seem content to gossip about the latest trends, Elphaba is busy envisioning a better Oz. She’s always looking ahead, guided by insights that others might dismiss as impractical or impossible.
“I don’t cause commotions, I am one.”
Elphaba doesn’t just play by the rules—she rewrites them. When others are satisfied with superficial solutions, she dives straight to the root cause, which is why she’s willing to confront the Wizard himself.
2. Bluntness and Problem-Solving (Extraverted Thinking – Te)
INTJs aren’t exactly known for their sugarcoating skills, and Elphaba is no exception. Her Te drives her to prioritize logic and efficiency, whether she’s tackling a social injustice or putting her classmates to sleep to rescue a cub. She speaks her mind without the fluff, which can come off as abrasive to those who don’t understand her intentions.
When Elphaba steps into her role as the so-called “Wicked Witch,” she doesn’t descend into villainy. Instead, she becomes a pragmatic leader, organizing plans to challenge the Wizard’s tyranny. Her ability to adapt and strategize in the face of adversity is a hallmark of Te in action.
“I’m through accepting limits ’cause someone says they’re so. Some things I cannot change, but ’til I try, I’ll never know.”
3. Unyielding Moral Compass (Fi)
While INTJs are known for their logic, their Fi (Introverted Feeling) gives them a deeply personal sense of right and wrong. Fi types care less about what society says and more about following their hearts, even if it’s unpopular (sorry, Galinda).
Elphaba’s activism for Animals is rooted in a deeply personal set of beliefs and values. She identifies with their suffering because she knows what it’s like to be marginalized. And no matter what she might be offered that could tempt her, she knows she must follow her heart. As she says, “Do you think I want to be this way? Do you think I want to care this much? Don’t you know how much easier my life would be if I didn’t?”
A big misconception about INTJs is that they are somewhat robotic and detached. Yes, INTJs prioritize logic and tend to keep their inner feelings close to the chest, but they also have very strong inner values. The result of this is that they use their bold, strategic prowess in tandem with their inner convictions to improve the world for a cause that matters to them.
Why Elphaba is an INTJ
- Visionary with a focus on the big picture.
Elphaba’s Introverted Intuition (Ni) drives her to see the larger implications of the Wizard’s rule, identifying systemic oppression and imagining a better future for Oz. - Uncompromising sense of purpose.
She refuses to accept the status quo, boldly challenging authority and pursuing her vision, even when it isolates her from others. - Independent and self-reliant.
Famously independent, Elphaba refuses to depend on anyone but herself, whether she’s caring for Nessarose or standing up to the Wizard. - Logical and results-driven.
Elphaba prefers practical, strategic action over empty gestures, taking matters into her own hands to enact meaningful change. - Emotionally reserved but deeply loyal.
Though Elphaba doesn’t openly express her emotions, her actions are guided by a strong internal moral compass, rooted in her values and empathy for the marginalized.

Glinda Upland – ESFJ
Glinda Upland is every bit the queen bee you’d expect—bubbly, polished, and a relentless social climber. Descended from nobility, Glinda lives for the spotlight, with her flawless wardrobe and sparkling charm drawing everyone in. At first glance, she’s all about fashion, popularity, and maintaining her perfect image. (She’d definitely crush it on Instagram if Oz had Wi-Fi.)
But beneath her frippery is a heart that wants to do good, even if it takes her a while to figure out what that means. Her time at Shiz University with her green-skinned roommate, Elphaba, shakes up her carefully curated life. While Elphaba challenges systemic injustice with her sharp intensity, Glinda wrestles with a simpler but equally poignant question: Am I as “good” as everyone thinks I am?
Cognitive Functions Breakdown
1. Extraverted Feeling (Fe) – The Social Butterfly and Peacemaker
Glinda’s Fe is extremely evident. Popularity isn’t just a status symbol for her; it’s a way to connect and feel loved. She knows how to read the room and say exactly what people want to hear, whether she’s charming her professors or rallying her classmates.
But Fe isn’t just about surface-level charm—it’s also about harmony and doing what’s best for others. Glinda actually does care about people; and when she does actually hurt Elphaba’s feelings, she works hard to rectify the situation. As Glinda matures, we see her wrestle with her conscience, questioning whether staying out of the fray is truly “good.”
“Think of celebrated heads of state or ‘specially great communicators, did they have brains or knowledge? Don’t make me laugh! They were popular!”
This quote showcases how Fe can make an individual aware of the power of influence and likeability. For Glinda, understanding what others want and what society values and sees as right or wrong is a guiding light in helping her achieve her ambitions.
2. Introverted Sensing (Si) – Tradition and Familiarity
Glinda’s Si shows up in her adherence to social norms and her love of all things traditional. She knows her details, and can perfect them to the tee. From her wardrobe to her hair flip, she knows how to make everything in her life “just so.” And on top of that, she cares about upholding traditions. While Elphaba quickly shakes off the expectations of the Wizard or Oz, Glinda chooses to work within the system to improve things rather than defy the system entirely.
3. Extraverted Intuition (Ne) – Glimmers of Growth
Though not a dominant function, Glinda’s Ne peeks through when she starts questioning her world. Her friendship with Elphaba sparks her curiosity, helping her see possibilities beyond her narrow definition of “goodness.” This budding openness to new ideas is what ultimately transforms her from a shallow socialite into a more self-aware leader.
Why Glinda is an ESFJ
- She naturally “gets” people.
Glinda knows exactly what people need to hear to feel valued and important. Her Fe drives her to create harmony and bring people together, even if it’s sometimes superficial. - She struggles to balance tradition with personal growth.
Her Si keeps her grounded, but her Ne nudges her toward new perspectives, especially as she learns from Elphaba. - Her charm is her superpower (and her Achilles’ heel).
Glinda’s Fe makes her a social genius, but it also leads her to prioritize appearances over substance—at least at first. - She cares about the details.
From fashion to etiquette, Glinda cares about making a good impression and having all her ducks in a row. Her room is exactly how she wants it, and no hair on her head is out of place.

Fiyero Tigelaar – ESTP
Fiyero is the quintessential ESTP: charismatic, impulsive, and allergic to rules. With his devil-may-care attitude and motto of “dancing through life,” he projects a carefree persona that hides a deeper, more existential layer. On the surface, he’s the cool guy everyone wants to be around—the Winkie Prince who effortlessly charms Galinda, organizes spontaneous dances, and seems perpetually unbothered. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll see the cracks in his “thoughtless” façade.
His song, “Dancing Through Life,” seems to imply thoughtlessness, however Fiyero is no brainless hearthrob. Lines like “Life is fraughtless when you’re thoughtless” and “Nothing matters but knowing nothing matters” show his knack for taking the easy route—until you realize this might be a coping mechanism. Beneath the bravado, Fiyero’s existential angst bubbles to the surface, suggesting that his recklessness and nonchalance may stem from deeper dissatisfaction.
Like many ESTPs, Fiyero craves immediate experiences and immersion in the physical world. He’s not interested in overthinking life’s meaning (“dust is what we come to” is basically his way of saying, “Why bother?”), but he’s also restless. This restlessness drives him toward risky behavior, whether it’s ignoring his royal responsibilities or later joining Elphaba’s rebellion. And while his Se (Extraverted Sensing) keeps him grounded in the now, his lack of deeper probing often leaves him feeling unmoored.
Why Fiyero is an ESTP
- Lives for the moment.
Fiyero’s philosophy of “dancing through life” embodies the ESTP’s love for excitement, spontaneity, and immediate experiences. He dives headfirst into whatever seems fun or interesting. - Charming and magnetic.
With his easygoing confidence, Fiyero effortlessly wins people over, whether he’s organizing a dance or catching Glinda’s eye. His natural charisma is a hallmark of ESTPs. - Reckless but resourceful.
Fiyero’s tendency to ignore rules and consequences stems from his Se-driven need for action and novelty. Yet, when it counts, he can adapt quickly and think logically on his feet. - Pragmatic and action-oriented: Fiyero doesn’t dwell on abstract ideals; he’s all about what works in the moment. Even when he joins Elphaba, it’s driven by his feelings and gut instincts rather than lofty plans.

The Wizard of Oz – ENTP
The Wizard of Oz is the ultimate villainous ENTP gone rogue: charming, clever, and completely untrustworthy. ENTPs are known for their quick wit and ability to manipulate situations to their advantage, and the Wizard embodies this in the worst way. He isn’t content with small-scale influence—he uses his charisma to control an entire country. Ozians may see him as their benevolent leader, but behind closed doors, he’s a power-hungry manipulator who lives on deception.
ENTPs are often described as idea machines, and the Wizard is no exception. He creates an entire persona as “the Wonderful Wizard” by exploiting the gullibility of others, a skill that makes him both fascinating and infuriating. It’s the dark side of Extraverted Intuition (Ne) combined with his persuasive charm that allows him to twist reality to fit his ambitions.
Why He’s an (unhealthy) ENTP:
- Quick-witted and adaptable: The Wizard thrives in chaotic situations and can spin any narrative to work in his favor.
- Inventive: He can easily understand how to create new systems, new blueprints, and figure out how Oz works (and then manipulate it).
- Charming, but falsely so: Like many unhealthy ENTPs, his charisma is a façade masking a selfish core.

Boq – ISFJ
Boq is the quintessential ISFJ: loyal, selfless, and quietly dependable, often to his own detriment. His defining trait is his willingness to do whatever it takes to please others—especially Glinda. He agrees to take Nessarose to the school dance not because he loves her but because it will make Glinda happy. Then when he has the chance to come clean, he’s too afraid of hurting Nessa’s feelings to speak the truth. This deep desire to help and protect others, even at his own expense, is common among ISFJs who are still developing and growing.
However, Boq’s good intentions sometimes backfire. ISFJs are often praised for their tact and kindness, but as Boq shows, these traits can become a double-edged sword and lead them into situations that don’t actually satisfy them.
Why He’s an ISFJ:
- Deeply loyal: Boq’s devotion to Glinda and later Nessarose defines his actions.
- Conflict-avoidant: He struggles to express his true feelings, even when it would save him from heartbreak.
- Quietly dependable: Boq supports others without expecting recognition, even when it puts him in harm’s way.

Madame Morrible – ENTJ
Madame Morrible is the ENTJ villain archetype dialed up to 11: commanding, manipulative, and ruthlessly ambitious. As the headmistress of Shiz University and a key figure in the Wizard’s regime, she uses her position to recruit and control others. The moment Elphaba starts to question the Wizard, Morrible immediately spins a narrative that will give the Wizard the upper-hand. Her mind is constantly playing chess with the people around her, discerning where to move everyone and how to tell each story to “win.”
ENTJs excel at seeing the big picture, and Morrible’s grand schemes for Oz reflect her ability to strategize and execute plans with cold precision.
Unlike the Wizard, whose charm masks his cruelty, Morrible doesn’t bother hiding her true nature. She’s direct, calculating, and unapologetically power-hungry. Her Extraverted Thinking (Te) drives her to treat people like pawns in her larger game, while her lack of Introverted Feeling (Fi) leaves her devoid of empathy.
Healthy ENTJs use their Te and Fi in tandem, achieving great strides that are also rooted in their personal values. Unhealthy ENTJs, like Morrible, are out of touch with Fi and can lose sight of what their morals truly are.
Keep in mind, Morrible is an unhealthy ENTJ and an evil person. ENTJs are just as capable of being good or bad as any other personality type; so do not make the assumption that just because she’s an ENTJ, ENTJs are going to show up like her.
“You’re so predictable. That’s what makes my job so easy.”
This line highlights her ENTJ confidence—and their insight into human patterns. ENTJs often feel like they can see how things will turn out in advance and can anticipate others’ movements.
Why She’s an (unhealthy) ENTJ:
- Strategic and power-driven: Morrible thrives on control and sees people as tools to achieve her goals.
- Unapologetically assertive: She takes charge in every situation, whether people like it or not.
- Manipulative and cold: Her lack of emotional connection to others makes her a dangerous adversary.

Dr. Dillamond – INFJ
Dr. Dillamond, the kind-hearted professor and activist, is the moral compass of Wicked and a classic INFJ. As a talking Goat, he experiences firsthand the systemic oppression of Animals in Oz. His deep empathy and commitment to justice drive him to speak out, even when it puts him at risk.
INFJs are often described as insightful and idealistic, and Dr. Dillamond fits this description perfectly. His Extraverted Feeling (Fe) fuels his desire to create harmony and be a father figure to his students. At the same time, his Introverted Intuition (Ni) helps him understand the broader implications of the Wizard’s policies. Despite his quiet demeanor, his courage in standing up for what’s right makes him one of the most inspiring characters in the story.
Why He’s an INFJ:
- Empathetic and principled: Dr. Dillamond’s moral convictions guide every decision he makes.
- Visionary: He sees the larger societal issues in Oz and works to address them.
- Quiet strength: Though soft-spoken, his actions speak volumes about his commitment to justice.

Nessarose Thropp – ISFJ
Nessarose starts her journey as a classic ISFJ: caring, dutiful, and deeply tied to her relationships. At her best, ISFJs bring stability and warmth to those around them, and Nessa’s devotion to her family reflects these strengths. She looks up to her sister, Elphaba, despite occasional frustrations, and longs to fit in and belong. But Nessa’s story is a cautionary tale of how an ISFJ’s strengths—loyalty, a sense of duty, and a desire to belong—can become destructive when fear and insecurity take over.
In Act One, Nessarose is hopeful but lonely, dependent on Elphaba for emotional support. She desperately wants to be seen as capable and independent, yet she simultaneously craves sympathy and help from others. Her defining trait is her yearning for love—not just romantic love, but the love and acceptance of others.
By Act Two, however, her once-innocent desire for love hardens into resentment. As Governor of Munchkinland, she tries to prove her independence but wields her power in ways that alienate those around her. She forces Boq to stay with her, ignoring his feelings, and lashes out at Elphaba for prioritizing the Animals over her. Nessa’s magic shoes, meant to grant her freedom, become symbolic of her growing bitterness.
Are All ISFJs Like Nessa?
It’s important to note that Nessarose’s unhealthy behavior doesn’t reflect all ISFJs—it reveals how fear, loneliness, and unchecked insecurity can distort their natural tendencies. Healthy ISFJs use their loyalty and care to nurture relationships, but Nessarose’s fear of rejection drives her to cling too tightly, pushing others away.
Her desire to relive the best day of her life, sipping the punch Boq makes, shows the tender, nostalgic side of her personality. Like many ISFJs, Nessa cherishes the past and finds comfort in memories of simpler, happier times. However, her inability to let go of those memories traps her in a cycle of longing and resentment.
