As with all fictional typings, I like to put a disclaimer. As an MBTI® practitioner, I can’t sit down with any of these characters and give them a thorough type assessment (although, how cool would that be?) These typings are based off superficial appearances in movies and are therefore prone to possible inaccuracies. That said, I’m fairly confident in their rightness! If you have an alternate idea just let me know in the comments!

ENFP – Maria von Trapp (Sound of Music)

Maria von Trapp ENFP

“One of the greatest things in human life is the ability to make plans. Even if they never come true-the joy of anticipating is irrevocably yours. That way one can live many more than just one life.” – Maria von Trapp

Creative and fun-loving, Maria is the embodiment of all things ENFP. She’s someone who yearns for adventure, speaks her mind, and thinks outside the box to find unconventional solutions to daunting challenges. No matter what obstacle is hurled her way, she seems to have a song, a phrase, or even a project to improve things and make people feel fully free to be themselves.

ENTP – Juno MacGuff (Juno)

Juno MacGuff ENTP

” Look, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person is still going to think the sun shines out your ass. That’s the kind of person that’s worth sticking with.”

Like many adolescent ENTPs, Juno possesses an intelligent, thoughtful mind that’s slightly disguised by her snarky, sarcastic exterior. She seems to know the perfect one-liner response to any absurd situation, but beneath her dry wit and quirkiness is a sensitive person who wants to find her place in a world where she’s dealt with abandonment and now an unexpected pregnancy.

INFP – Celine (Before Sunrise)

Celine INFP

“If there’s any kind of magic in this world it must be in the attempt of understanding someone – sharing something. I know, it’s almost impossible to succeed …. but who cares really? The answer must be in the attempt.”

An idealist and romantic at heart, Celine has an emotional depth that takes you right to the source of what life is all about. She notices things about people and appreciates the unique, intangible connections that everyone shares. Her knack for emotional brainstorming and her contagious sense of wonder give her the charm and intelligence that many INFPs possess.

INTP – Alice Kingsleigh (Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland)

“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” – Alice Kingsleigh

Deeply curious, Alice constantly questions the conventions and traditions of her time. She famously asks the question, “Who’s to say what’s proper? What if we agreed that ‘proper’ meant wearing codfish on your head? Would you wear it?” INTPs will relate to how Alice questions the rules and expectations of those around her. They will also relate to her need for independence, her curiosity, and her desire to understand the truths of the universe.

ENFJ – Diana Prince (Wonder Woman)

Wonder Woman ENFJ

“I used to want to save the world. To end war and bring peace to mankind. But then I glimpsed the darkness that lives within their light and learned that inside every one of them, there will always be both. A choice each must make for themselves. Something no hero will ever defeat. And now I know, that only love can truly save the world. So I stay, I fight, and I give, for the world I know can be. This is my mission now. Forever.– Diana Prince

Guided by a desire to help people, Diana Prince, a.k.a. “Wonder Woman” lives with the conviction and drive characteristic of healthy ENFJs. Her empathetic, connecting nature makes her a superhero that people can believe in. “Only love can save the world” is her motto, and she lives this out by putting herself on the front lines in order to protect others.

ENTJ – Imperator Furiosa (Mad Max: Fury Road)

Imperator Furiosa: “Hey. What’s your name? What do I call you?”

Max Rockatansky: “Does it matter?”

Imperator Furiosa: “Fine. When I yell “fool,” you drive out of here as fast as you can.”

Strong-willed and fierce, Imperator Furiosa will stop at nothing to do what she believes in. Like many ENTJs she knows how to think quickly and make decisions in make-or-break situations. She doesn’t have an issue taking leadership and strives to remain objective in the face of chaos. She has little patience with sentiment and emotional reactions and instead remains a tough leader as evidenced in her line, “If you want to get through this, do as I say.”

INFJ – Lorraine Warren (The Conjuring)

Lorraine Warren INFJ

“Look, I know how it is. I know what it’s like to lose your friends because you’re different. But I also know that one person can change everything. And you just have to open up to them.” – Lorraine Warren

Lorraine Warren was a real individual who professed to be clairvoyant and worked as a demonologist alongside the Roman Catholic church. In the “Conjuring” films, Lorraine’s top priority is to protect people and tap into their needs and emotional and spiritual difficulties. She has an empathetic way with words and can help people feel safe in sharing their innermost struggles. She never looks at the world around her in a surface-level way. She’s always probing deeper, trying to understand what’s going on beneath the obvious. She follows her hunches even if there isn’t any tangible proof of a demonic possession or supernatural power somewhere. While she does try to use science and objective data, she knows that the supernatural world doesn’t always follow scientific pathways. She has a gift for intuitively understanding people and connecting the dots to see where problems lie and how to end a haunting.

INTJ – Clarice Starling (Silence of the Lambs)

Clarice Starling INTJ

“You see a lot, Doctor. But are you strong enough to point that high-powered perception at yourself? What about it? Why don’t you – why don’t you look at yourself and write down what you see? Or maybe you’re afraid to.”

Hard-working and insightful, Clarice Starling structures her life in order to meet her long-term goals and desires. She knows how to read between the lines and sense others people’s deeper motivations. She also observes and analyzes various perspectives in order to guess a criminal’s next move. Even in a tough case such as Hannibal Lecter’s, she’s able to crack past his facade and understand what’s really going on. Like most INTJs, she can put her feelings aside in order to move forward and stay focused. She has no problem taking criticism and standing up for herself. Though she can become emotional, she doesn’t let it influence her decisions.

ESFP – Annie Porter (Speed)

Annie Porter ESFP

Jack Traven: “I have to warn you, I’ve heard relationships based on tense experiences never work.”

Annie: “Okay. We’ll have to base it on sex then.”

Annie Porter knows how to act quickly in a crisis to circumvent danger. Rather than hypothesizing about dozens of possibilities or panicking, she jumps into action and quite literally takes the wheel. Like most ESFPs she knows how to pay attention to her surroundings and maintain her sense of humor. Her sly wit and caring, realistic demeanor characterize some of the things that makes ESFPs stand out in the world.

ESTP – Merida (Brave)

Merida ESTP

“There are those who say fate is something beyond our command. That destiny is not our own, but I know better. Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it.”

ESTPs strive to have freedom and live according to their instincts. Merida hates the idea of being tied down to traditions that don’t align with her adventurous, free-spirited self. She loathes the useless rules and regulations pressured on her by her overly-proper mother. Straight-talking and bold, she’s not afraid to go against the grain and get into trouble in order to get what she wants and do what she believes makes the most sense for her.

ISFP – The Bride/Beatrix Kiddo (Kill Bill)

The Bride ISFP

“Bill’s last bullet put me in a coma – A coma I was to lie in for four years. When I woke up, I went on what the movie advertisements refer to as a ’roaring rampage of revenge.‘ I roared. And I rampaged. And I got bloody satisfaction. I’ve killed a hell of a lot of people to get to this point, but I have only one more. The last one. The one I’m driving to right now. The only one left. And when I arrive at my destination, I am gonna kill Bill.” – Beatrix Kiddo

One against the world, Beatrix Kiddo (“The Bride”) will do almost anything to get revenge for her unborn child and her loved ones. Quiet and mysterious, she does what feels is right in the moment and trusts her instincts to guide her on her journey. Like most ISFPs, she’s conscious of her surroundings and quick to react to even the smallest changes (such as using the reflection in her sword to garner her enemies’ movements). She’s driven by something stronger than logic and practicality; she must do what her heart is telling her, and even though she is a deadly warrior, she shows bits of compassion to the people who have hurt her most. She’s driven by her strong sense of justice and often can empathize with other people’s needs and feelings (for example, when she fought Vernita and then told her daughter she’d be waiting if she wanted to avenge her mother someday). All around, Beatrix shows us that even feeling-dominant personality types can be formidable enemies.

ISTP – Valkyrie/Brunnhilde (Thor: Ragnarok)

Valkyrie ISTP

“I don’t plan to stop drinking. But… I don’t wanna forget. I can’t turn away anymore. So… if I’m gonna die, well… it might as well be driving my sword through the heart of that murderous hag.” – Valkyrie

Mistress of the sword and spear, Valkyrie is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. Her brusque, straightforward manner and quickness to take action make her a valuable warrior, even if she’s occasionally intoxicated. Like most ISTPs, she keeps her feelings close to the chest and tries to maintain an element of autonomy and freedom in whatever way she can. She understands tools, weapons, and ships, quickly grasping their inner workings and using anything at her disposal to succeed.

ESFJ – Claire Standish (The Breakfast Club)

Claire Standish ESFJ

” You know, I have just as, many feelings as you do and it hurts so much when someone steps all over them.” – Claire Standish

Popular but sensitive, Claire struggles to cope with her parent’s tumultuous relationship, the pressure of her friend group, and finding her true identity. While many see her as shallow and materialistic, she’s actually deeply caring and thoughtful but is often swayed by a need to “keep up appearances” for her friends. She feels that she needs a group or ecosystem where she belongs because she’s not able to get that at home. Like most ESFJs, she’s conscious of people’s feelings and the social expectations in her environment. She also seems more sensing than intuitive-leaning, focusing on what’s happening around her and paying attention to details rather than looking for a hidden meaning behind everything.

ESTJ – Princess Leia Organa (Star Wars)

Leia Organa ESTJ

“Someone has to save our skins. Into the garbage chute, Fly Boy.” – Leia Organa

Down-to-earth and pragmatic, Princess Leia knows how to get things done in an efficient manner. She shows the leadership and no-nonsense demeanor of the ESTJ, even when others are panicking or the situation is dire. She has a certain hard-headedness that keeps her going and allows her not to get swept up in panic or emotional overwhelm. She is unwilling to suffer fools and, while she can appear self-righteous at times, she has a lot of integrity and knows she has to do what’s best for her whole team.

ISFJ – Yu Shu Lien (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)

Yu Shu Lien ISFJ

“Fighters have rules, too. Friendship, trust, integrity. Always keep your promise. Without rules we wouldn’t survive long.” – Yu Shu Lien

Committed and dutiful, Yu Shu Lien is an accomplished business woman and warrior. She has a high set of standards she strives to follow and is willing to forego many of her heart’s wishes to fulfill her obligations. Being responsible, making sure everything is taken care of, and paying attention to what’s important to people; these are the things that matter to ISFJs. Even when Yu Shu Lien feels tempted to lash out in anger, she’s prone to forgiveness, and will do what it takes to live a life that aligns with her sense of duty and her deepest personal values.

ISTJ – Zoe Washburne (Serenity)

Zoe Washburne ISTJ

Tracey: I didn’t know you were out there.
Zoe: Sort of the point. Stealth. You may have heard of it.
Tracey: I don’t think they covered that in Basic.
Zoe: Well at least they covered “Dropping your weapon so you can eat beans and get yourself shot.”
Tracey: Yeah, I got a badge in that. Won’t happen again.
Zoe: When it does I’m just gonna watch.

Competent, detail-oriented, and blunt, Zoe Washburne captures the resolve and focus of the ISTJ type. She’s always planning ahead, trying to stay level headed, and zeroing in on the task at hand. Her calm confidence and dependability make her a beacon of strength for her crew; and her loyalty is second to none. Like most ISTJs, once Zoe has committed to the people she believes in, she’s not willing to stray from them, no matter what the cost is.

  2. I’ve studied typology via the myers-briggs lens and used it for the betterment of my high school students. I was actively collecting data to show how 2 or more Xs in one’s 4-letter ID code strongly pointed to a gifted person. Cancer stopped me. If you would like to know more, please send email.

  3. I watch few films, but am amazed it’s not just me who has watched Before Sunrise! (most people haven’t heard of it lol!) I remember being deeply moved, years/decades ago.
