Here’s the Harry Potter Character You’d Be, Based On Your Enneagram Type

Have you ever found yourself relating to one of the characters from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? Do you ever think “Am I more of a Ron or Remus?”

I’m currently reading The Chamber of Secrets to my 8-year-old son after having read the series to my eldest daughter many years ago. J.K. Rowling’s books have been like a dear friend to me as I’ve raised my children over the years. We always enjoy discussing the characters and their choices and getting swept away in the adventure of it all.

The Enneagram Types of the Harry Potter characters

In today’s post we’re going to take a look at the characters through the lens of the Enneagram.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Enneagram, it is a personality type system that consists of nine different types. Each type has its own unique set of characteristics, fears, desires, strengths, and weaknesses. You can find out more about the Enneagram in my introductory article on the subject. You can also find out what your Enneagram type is by taking our questionnaire.

The Harry Potter Character with Your Enneagram Type

Enneagram 1 – Hermione Granger and Minerva McGonagall

Enneagram 1 Hermione Granger and Minerva McGonagall

“I hope you’re pleased with yourselves. We could all have been killed — or worse, expelled. Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to bed.” ― Hermione Granger”I’m hoping to do some good in the world.” – Hermione Granger

“Why is it when something happens, it is always you three?” – Minerva McGonagall

Hard-working and principled, Hermione Granger is the Enneagram 1 to a tee. She is highly organized and always strives for perfection in her work. Her sense of justice and fairness drives her to seek out and fight against social injustice, making her an excellent role model for young girls everywhere. Whether she’s preparing a defense for Buckbeat to save him from persecution or promoting the freedom of house elves, Hermione is always working to make the world a better place.

Minerva McGonagall is no-nonsense and highly principled, much like Enneagram 1 Hermione Granger. She is a staunch defender of the values and traditions of Hogwarts, putting her students and the school first at all times. Her strict but fair teaching style inspires great respect from both staff and students alike, earning her the title of Headmistress not once but twice during her career at Hogwarts.

Enneagram 2 – Molly Weasley

Enneagram 2 Molly Weasley

“I just want to make sure that you’re all right.”

Molly Weasley is the Enneagram 2 in the Harry Potter series. Although she can be strict and sharp-tongued, she is also deeply devoted to her loved ones. Her empathy and generosity are things that Harry comes to love and find comfort in over his years at Hogwarts. She is quick to offer help and support, whether it’s making a warm meal for Harry when he turns up on their doorstep in The Chamber of Secrets, or joining the Order of the Phoenix to fight against Voldemort. Putting her family and loved ones before herself comes naturally, but she shows her One wing in her tendency to set strict guidelines and rules (as well as disciplines).

Enneagram 3 – Oliver Wood and Fleur Delacour

Enmeagram 3 Oliver Wood and Fleur Delacour

“I don’t care if you fall off your broom as long as you catch the Snitch first.” – Oliver Wood

As the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, Oliver Wood is determined to be the best. He’s intensely driven and his dedication to the sport is clear from the start. Enneagram 3 types are often very competitive and enthusiastic, becoming highly skilled at their chosen pursuit. Oliver is no exception, and his years of hard work lead him to be one of the best Quidditch players in his year. However, Enneagram 3s can also be self-centered and arrogant if they aren’t careful, and Oliver shows this characteristic in his often sharp-tongued responses to those he perceives as rivals.

Fleur Delacour is competitive and driven, but she’s not superficial or shallow (although, in her younger years, she was a bit snobbish). While she focuses on her appearance and image like most Threes, she’s also deeply caring. When her fiancee’s face is terribly disfigured, rather than leaving, she insists that the scars “show his bravery.” Threes are attracted to signs of resilience, bravery, and competence, and Fleur gives us an excellent example of that.

Enneagram 4 – Severus Snape

Enneagram 4 Severus Snape

“Well, it may have escaped your notice, but life isn’t fair.”

Few characters go through as much in the Harry Potter series as Severus Snape. At first, Snape appears scheming and self-absorbed, but as the series progresses, we see that he has a well of sensitivity and feeling underneath his stern glare.

Snape often feels like the underdog or “black sheep” of Hogwarts, due to a childhood where he was teased for his Muggle-born mother and poor financial situation. He harbors bitterness towards Harry because he reminds Snape of the man who he believes ruined his life: James Potter. But in Lily’s honor, Snape still goes to great lengths to protect Harry.

Enneagram 4s are highly sensitive and often have strong emotions that they may not show to others. Often they feel like prisoners of their past, and dealt with childhoods where they felt misunderstood or out of place. Snape tends to fixate on past hurts a great deal, even allowing them to tarnish his opinion of Harry.

According to Enneagram expert Russ Hudson, Enneagram Fours deal with disappointment by “limiting access” or playing hard to get. Yet underneath their mysterious demeanor they fear that no one will ever truly care for them. While Snape appears detached and cold, he really is anything but. To the end, he remains fiercely loyal to the one love of his life. Every action he takes is in her honor.

I believe that Snape is the Sexual subtype of the Four. These Fours believe that because they have suffered so much in life they need some form of compensation. We can see this in the ways Snape goes out of his way to punish Harry, even though he’s still trying to protect him. Sexual Fours are the angriest of the Fours, and can appear arrogant, detached, and superior. Yet underneath all that is a great deal of emotional depth, sensitivity, and a desire to find their true purpose and/or an idealized partner.

Enneagram 5 – Rowena Ravenclaw and Albus Dumbledore

Enneagram 5 Rowena Ravenclaw and Albus Dumbledore

“Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure” – Rowena Ravenclaw

Rowena Ravenclaw is a deeply intelligent and creative Enneagram 5. As one of Hogwarts’ founders, she values knowledge and learning above all else. Enneagram Fives are often seen as reclusive and solitary, but they also tend to have a deeply specialized intelligence, engaging intensely in their chosen field of study. Ravenclaw is no exception, and her extensive research into magic has given her a reputation as one of the most skilled witches at Hogwarts.

I’m typing Albus Dumbledore based on his appearance in the Harry Potter series. I haven’t read the Fantastic Beasts book, so I apologize if this doesn’t reconcile with younger Albus. Like most Fives, Albus is highly intelligent and knowledgeable. Also like many social subtypes of the Five, Albus is drawn towards academics and takes on the role of the “wise person” who brings back knowledge to Hogwarts. He’s able to see the bigger picture and often becomes preoccupied by his thoughts and imaginings. While he’s quite insightful, he also tends to be removed and distant. In fact, he’s somewhat of a mystery to everyone at Hogwarts, especially Harry. His basic fear seems to be that he will be incapable of solving the problems that are threatening Hogwarts. Albus was so protective of who he was and his space that Harry really didn’t learn that much about him in his life. It was only after his death that Harry was able to understand Dumbledore more fully.

Enneagram 6 – Harry Potter and Ron Weasley

Enneagram 6 Ron Weasley and Harry Potter

“So that’s it, is it? Stay there? That’s all anyone could tell me after I got attacked by those dementors too! Just stay put while the grown-ups sort it out, Harry! We won’t bother telling you anything, though, because your tiny little brain might not be able to cope with it!” – Harry Potter

Labeled “The Loyalists,” Sixes will do anything to preserve their community and the people they trust. They get their sense of security and comfort from their groups. We see this in the way Ron and Harry find their sense of purpose and survival in each other and often wind up in “us vs. them” confrontations with other groups at Hogwarts.

Sixes also have mixed feelings about rules. While they can appear like dutiful rule followers, they can also bend or break the rules if they feel threatened (or if their community is threatened). Ron and Harry will disobey the rules of Hogwarts or throw themselves into harm’s way to protect those they love – whether it’s Harry standing up to bullies on the train in The Philosopher’s Stone or Ron standing up to Snape when he was cruel to Hermione. Yet while Sixes can appear bold at times, they are often deeply anxious. Ron tries to hide his anxiety with humor and Harry often ruminates on his fears in his own mind. This anxiety can lead Enneagram 6s to become paranoid or suspicious of others which we see at various times throughout the Harry Potter series with both Ron and Harry.

Enneagram 7 – Fred and George Weasley

Enneagram 7 Fred and George Weasley

“Where’s the fun without a bit of risk?”

The Weasley twins are the ultimate Enneagram Sevens – impulsive, fun-loving, and always eager for a good time. Enneagram Sevens are often seen as highly excitable and energetic, constantly seeking novelty and new experiences. Fred and George embody this quality to the fullest extent with their wild pranks and willingness to take risks, both in their work and in life. Enneagram Sevens want to give the people they love good experiences, which the Weasley twins demonstrate through their successful business ventures and impressive magical talents. Sevens also tend to be highly creative, a trait that the Weasley twins certainly embody with their inventive tricks and clever jokes.

Enneagram 8 – Godric Gryffindor

Enneagram 8 Godric Gryffindor

“You might belong in Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart, their daring, nerve, and chivalry set Gryffindors apart.” – The Sorting Hat

As one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Godric Gryffindor is the epitome of a mature Enneagram Eight. Healthy Enneagram Eights are known for their strength, courage, and determination. They are often seen as leaders and are not afraid to take risks or stand up for what they believe in. Gryffindor is no exception – he is a brave and powerful wizard who is always ready to fight against injustice. As a healthy and mature Eight, we see that Gryffindor can be tolerant and protective, accepting Muggle-borns more than any of the other three founders of Hogwarts ever would. This protectiveness and willingness to give it all to protect the underdog is a common quality of healthy Eights.

Enneagram 9 – Luna Lovegood and Remus Lupin

Enneagram 9 Remus Lupin and Luna Lovegood

“Being different isn’t a bad thing. It means you’re brave enough to be yourself.” – Luna Lovegood

“People are disappearing daily. If we start fighting amongst ourselves, we’re doomed.” – Remus Lupin

Luna Lovegood is a gentle and dreamy Enneagram Nine. Enneagram Nines are known for their easy-going nature, compassion, and ability to emphasize the pleasant things in life. They often go with the flow and are not easily ruffled by the chaos of the world around them. Luna grew up in an unconventional family, so her unconventional ways seemed natural to her. Her energy is calming and accepting, and she is able to see the beauty in things that others might find strange or off-putting. Nines have a tendency to be creative and imaginative, two qualities that Luna certainly possesses. Her dreamy nature often leads her on fantastic adventures, both in her mind and in reality.

Remus Lupin is an Enneagram Nine who has a great capacity for empathy and compassion. Even though he’s suffered a great deal of prejudice in his life due to his lycanthropy, he’s managed to maintain the ability to see good in everyone. Even Snape, who goes behind his back numerous times to expose him, is treated with patience and forgiveness. Yet even though he is a compassionate man, Lupin didn’t always know how to make a stand – something that Nines can struggle with. Lupin’s greatest regret was that he didn’t stop Sirius and James from bullying Snape in school, because he feared separation of them. This fear of separation and fragmentation is something that Enneagram Nines often struggle with. However, Lupin eventually learns to stand up for himself and others, and becomes a powerful force for good in the wizarding world.

  1. With that title, of course I’d read right away!! 🙂

For the 7, indeed there’s no more perfect example than the twins. 🙂
I had never thought much about their enneatypes, even though I re-read the series recently.

I think Ginny might be an 8? in the book, not in the movies where she’s not much more than a wall. In the book… yeah she has a strong vibe, strong sense of justice, fierce determination. I had forgotten why Harry would fall in love with her, having just watched the movie in the previous decade. But she’s awesome.

Arthur would be a 5, probably? He’s always quite detached from everything, but highly interested in studying new stuff.

The part about the Sexual 4 feeling they need compensation for their suffering is interesting. I slightly feel that way, I think? I’m never really sure what I feel. I’m INTP, and 874, Sexual type for the 8, I’m not sure how it goes for the other centers. And being INTP I can only be Ravenclaw, that’s just me, but my second house would be Gryffindor, I still have the strong sense of justice, being protective and other 8 stuff. 🙂

Voldemort would be a 3? Umbridge a 1, Percy too?
About Charlie and Bill, they might be 8? But I’m not sure we know them enough? Dobbie would be a 6, or a 4? My first thought was 4, then I went to 6 because he’s so loyal to Harry, then came back to 4 because he’s so attached to being independant and his own being. 🙂

Sirius might be a 3? or an 8?

I would have loved seing an additional paragraph with other characters just by name, I love these books SO MUCH, it shows in my house, I have so many Harry Potter stuff x)

    1. I’d argue Luna is a 4, infp, as she carries unique sense of identity and okay with going against the flow. Harry is an ESTP, 4w5 or 5 w 4. Ron a 9 w 8. Beatricks black 8w7, Ginny an 8, Sirius 8 w 9. Dumbledore a 1 w 2. Malfoys mom a 2. Harry’s mom a 2. Mrs Weasley a healthy 6 loyal, but worries alot and can overreact. Harry’s dad an 8? Delores Umbrage unhealthy 6,isfj. Jinx a 4. Har
Hagrid 9 w 8. Neville long bottom 9 w 1. My daughter and I argue these out all the time 🙂

  2. Well, for me as a nine this is accurate, and it makes me more happy to see that Luna is also a nine, she is definitely the character I relate the most…

  3. Quite funny- I’m a Ravenclaw, and a enneagram 5. although I nearly split evenly between Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, and I split very closely with 5 and 4 whenever I take a really accurate enneagram test. That makes me confused, since Snape is a four, but I have near to no relation to being in Slytherin. (Coco melon song saying “we can dribble the ball” while they’re playing soccer, what?!)
