The Myers-Briggs® Types of the My Hero Academia Characters

My Hero Academia holds a special place in my heart as the first anime I ever watched and the one that converted me to being a fan of all things Funimation. This anime will always be something special, due in part to the kaleidoscope of interesting and varied characters and the way their unique personalities play off each other. In today’s article, we’re going to explore the unique Myers-Briggs® personality types of the major character in the show. Ever wondered if you’re more of an All-Might or a Froppy? This article will tell you!

Disclaimer: Obviously I couldn’t pull Bakugo aside to give him a Myers-Briggs® questionnaire (not sure he would have liked that anyway) so these typings are all my best guesses. As an MBTI® practitioner I do the best I can, but typing fictional characters always relies on a lot of speculation and guesswork 🙂

The Myers-Briggs® Types of the My Hero Academia Characters

Toshinori Yagi (All-Might) – ENFJ

“You are not just an aspiring hero following in my footsteps. You are on your own path toward greatness. As your teacher, I must walk beside you.” – All-Might

All-Might has the charisma, drive, and vision of the healthy ENFJ. More than anything, he strives to be a symbol of peace and meet adversity with a smile. He’s skilled at encouraging people and stabilizing their moods. He can also be serious and pushy when the situation demands it. As an intuitive, he is quickly frustrated by impersonal, detailed tasks like paperwork. He’d rather focus on helping people and interacting with fans than deal with minutiae or detailed tasks. He’s especially focused on what people need for the future, and often chooses the less logical choice for the one that his heart is guiding him to (like choosing Izuku to pass on his quirk to).

Shoto Aizawa “Eraserhead” – ISTP

Shoto Aizawa, an ISTP anime character

“This is the hero course…Go somewhere else if you want to play at being friends.” – Shoto Aizawa

Reserved and pragmatic, Aizawa holds his students to high standards without being pushy or overbearing. He encourages them to think for themselves and think logically, often appearing cold and apathetic because of his “figure it out for yourself” way of doing things. Unlike an STJ type, Aizawa prefers to only share the most relevant information with his students and then step back and let them handle life’s challenges. Despite his somewhat chilly, apathetic exterior, Aizawa still cares deeply about his students and can be surprisingly protective and nurturing at times. He’s an excellent example of how being a thinking type doesn’t mean being uncaring.

Tsuyu Asui “Froppy” – INTP

“Hey Midoriya, I always say what I think no matter what is on my mind.”  – Tsuyu Asui

Ingenious and likable, “Froppy” keeps a steady head in situations where everyone else seems to be panicking. Her first concern in most situations is to troubleshoot the most logical solution. She has no problem thinking creatively or innovating, and in a show full of emotionally intense individuals (we’re looking at you, Bakugo and Deku) Froppy is a refreshingly steady, reasonable type. Her ingenuity on the battlefield and her unflappable sense of logic make her a pillar of strength to her friends.

Katsuki Bakugo – ESTP

Katsuki Bakugou enneagram 8

“Stop talking. I will win. That’s what heroes do.” – Katsuki Bakugo

Competitive and aggressive, viewers seem to either love or hate Bakugo. He’s a character of restless energy and nearly unbeatable tactical ability. Like many ESTPs, he thinks quickly on his feet, responding in ingenious ways during battles or hand-to-hand combat. He commits to a challenge, using 110% of his energy to take down his enemies. While on the outside Bakugo might seem all brawn and no brains, when people see him in action they are surprised by how clever and ingenious his moves really are. He is extremely intelligent and perceptive, capable of not only strategic planning but quick improvising.

Ochaka Uraraka “Uravity” – ESFJ

“Let’s all work hard together and laugh together again!” – Ochaka Uraraka

Conscientious and friendly, Ochaka believes in supporting her classmates and providing for her family. She’s quickly able to read people’s emotions and sense their comfort levels; making jokes or putting people at ease in awkward situations. She’s also very practical; saving money so she can afford necessities and sleeping so she doesn’t waste oxygen. In typical ESFJ fashion, she focuses on her responsibilities to others more than anything else. She knows that if she can become a powerful hero that she can provide for her family and give them a comfortable life. For ESFJs, this kind of focus and responsibility on family and community values is a huge motivating factor.

Denki Kaminari – ENTP

“It’s only been a brief while since our conversation has commenced and yet already we have been made apodictically cognizant of your personality, redolent as it is, of a turd getting steamed in a sewer.” – Denki Kaminari

Denki Kaminari is one of the most underestimated yet lovable characters in the series. He often appears reckless and blunt, rushing into new opportunities or possibilities headlong without thinking about tact or all the details that could get in his way. As one of the few ENxPs at UA High it seems like his gifts are undervalued. Because his Quirk tends to leave him a little woozy and mentally foggy, people often make fun of him or consider him stupid. To the contrast, he shows great strategic intelligence, particularly in the joint training when he devised a plan to defeat Ibara Shiozaki. He also shows surprising knowledge when it comes to literature and music, surprising his teammates when he rattles off certain facts or uses advanced vocabulary that stuns his classmates.

Shoto Todoroki – ISFP

“If you wanna stop this, then stand up! Because I’ve got one thing to say to you! Never forget who you want to become!” – Shoto Todoroki

While many people type Todoroki as INTJ, I believe this largely comes down to false stereotypes about ISFPs rather than a true understanding of what ISFPs are actually like. Todoroki is extremely swift at responding to immediate crises’ whereas an INTJ would resemble Lelouch vi Britannia (Code Geass) more, working in the background to create intricate strategies and long-term plans. Todoroki tailors his life around his value system. Everything he does must align with what he believes is personally right for him and his ethical code. He will even go so far as to lose an important fight if it means he’s adhering to his ideals. His introspective, conscientious nature as well as his smooth reflexes on the battlefield reminds us of how powerful Introverted Feeling and Extraverted Sensation really are when they are working together.

Tenya Iida – ISTJ

Tenya Iida enneagram one

“How is having a goal to support your livelihood not admirable?” – Tenya Iida

Tenya Iida, like most ISTJs, is driven by a sense of responsibility and duty. More than anything, he wants to excel at his quirks so that he can live up to his older brother’s example. He may be a rule-follower, but he’s also willing to break the rules when it comes to protecting the legacy of the ones he loves most. He is deeply devoted as a friend and brother, and his discipline and hard-working nature make him a source of strength for his entire UA class. His detail-oriented perceptiveness enables him to notice when anything is out of synch or dangerous, and his pragmatic nature enables him to come up with strong plans of action when everyone else is panicking. His hunger for efficiency, his loyalty, and his attention to detail all make him a strong ISTJ character.

Eijiro Kirishima – ESFP

“Yo, you there!! You bullying an underclassman for cheap change?! And you call yourselves men!?”Ejiro Kirishima

My personal favorite MHA character, Eijiro is a supportive and charismatic friend to everyone at UA High. Quick to take action and defend his classmates, he’s willing to push himself to extremes to stand up for what he believes in. It’s especially important to Eijiro to be noble, brave, determined, and selfless. He tailors his life around these things, often being moved to tears when he can see people demonstrating such traits. As a healthy ESFP, Eijiro strives to be honest and kind, defending others and trying as hard as possible to be like his personal hero, Red Riot.

Izuku Midoriya – INFJ

Izuku Midoriya enneagram 6

“Sometimes I do feel like a failure. Like there’s no hope for me. But even so, I’m not gonna give up. Ever!” – Izuku Midoriya

Visionary and compassionate, Izuku Midoriya tailors his entire life around one goal:  to be a hero who brings hope and peace to all. In typical INFJ fashion, Midoriya (or “Deku” as he is often called) likes plenty of time to strategize his next move. Unfortunately, on the battlefield, that extra time isn’t always an option. Throughout the series, we see Midoriya come to grips with his inferior Extraverted Sensation and learn to react quickly in the moment against terrifying foes. Midoriya’s kindness, visionary focus, and strategic way of thinking are great examples of a healthy INFJ in superhero form.

Momo Yaoyorozu – ISFJ

“We should always start with the basics to develop the depth of learning. We must strive to devote ourselves wholeheartedly.” – Momo Yaoyorozu

Momo Yaoyorozu is an excellent example of an intelligent, ambitious ISFJ. While many ISFJs in film or television are described as nurturers and motherly figures, Momo is much more intellectual and take-charge. She thrives when she has to sort through a plethora of internal data in order to create weapons from her own body. She’s highly competent and organized, but she also cares deeply about what others think of her and how they are feeling. Level-headed and practical, she seems to be able to face nearly any danger in stride. For a teen, she seems very in tune to both the feeling and thinking sides of her personality. This is fairly common for IxFJs in mid-life, but not as common in adolescence. However, as Momo is an anime character, we’ll have to let that go!

Hanta Sero “Cellophane” – ESTP

“There were birds in the tree and I told Tokoyami that he should go say hi to his brothers, so he climbed up the tree to spite me but now he won’t get down.” – Hanta Sero

Laid-back and sociable, Hanta Sero brings humor, tactical intelligence, and charisma to UA high. He strives to be brave and dauntless on the battlefield, using his tape to protect others from enemy attacks or grab objects and launch them at his enemies. He also uses his tape for mobility, quickly finding attachment points that he can use to get closer to his enemies. His ability to take in his environment and use it to his advantage is astounding and one of the things that ESxPs tend to excel at.

Kyouka Jiro – ISTP

Kyouka Jiro, an ISTP anime character

“No, go on. Keep acting all adorable and born yesterday. I’m here to help.” – Kyouka Jiro

In her daily life, Kyoka acts unenthusiastic and indifferent. Being snarky and sarcastic, she’s prone to making insensitive jabs at those around her.  Kyoka is not quick to let others in, preferring to keep her interests and ideas private. However, with enough social pressure, she can be convinced to share. In spite of her appearance, Kyoka can be rather sensitive to the opinions of others, which is hinted at by the harsh ways that she reacts to certain things people say (like getting mocked for not having a girly room). When angered, she’s prone to reacting physically. Of course, sometimes this anger is unleashed in defense of one of her friends. In battle, Kyoka is strategic and cool-headed. She uses whatever tools are available to her to fight effectively, which can include, for instance, throwing Kaminari at her opponents. Kyouka’s description and typing are written by Mara from PracticalTyping.com.

Ojira Mashirao – ISFP

“I know this is a great opportunity. And I know how stupid it must seem to throw it away…but this is the final tournament…everyone else made it here by their own strength. Yet I’m standing here, and I don’t even know how or why. I just can’t take it.” – Ojira Mashirao

Calm and chivalrous, Ojira captures some of the best qualities of a healthy ISFP. He lives by his ethics and has a deep sense of inner integrity that he refuses to compromise. He even goes so far as to refuse to accept an award during a tournament because he feels he didn’t win it by his own strength. Sensitive and self-conscious, he swiftly puts his own life on the line in order to protect his fellow classmates. He follows his heart and his sense of right and wrong regardless of the trouble it may cause him in the long run.

Enji Todoroki “Endeavor” – ESTJ

“No matter how powerful or intense your ability is, your foundation is always built upon an honest accumulation of experiences…Our only option is to accumulate experience. Even if you’re doing the same thing repetitively, the amount of experience you can accumulate here out in the field can’t even be compared to what you get at school.” – Enji Todoroki

Ambitious and competitive, Enji a.k.a. “Endeavor” will do whatever it takes to become the #1 hero or raise a child worthy of becoming one. While he can be cruel and callous, he is also extremely dependable and hard-working. He doesn’t want to cheat his way to the top, rather he wants to earn success through merit and perseverance. Todoroki is an unhealthy version of an ESTJ, but as the manga (or TV series) progresses we get to see him get in touch with his introverted feeling side and consider his actions and choices more carefully.

Mina Ashido – ESFP

“The old you is not going anywhere with that emo look on your face! If you overcome that gloomy self of yours…let me know!” – Mina Ashido

Cheerful and playful, Mina Ashido loves to dance, shop, spend time with her friends, and protect others from villains. While she may seem all fun and games with her friends, she can be a daunting foe on the battlefield and a surprisingly courageous hero. Like most ESFPs, she has a strong sense of ethics and will put her life on the line to do what she feels is right. She can react quickly to incoming information, take in a lot of detailed information, and assess situations on the spot to use her acid quirk to its best advantage.

Hizashi Yamada “Present Mic” – ESFP

“The great hero Napoleon Bonaparte once said…’True heroism consists of being superior to the ills of life.’ Plus Ultra!! Break a leg, everyone!!!” – Present Mic

Gregarious and clever, Hizashi Yamada lives up to the “Entertainer” stereotypes of the ESFP personality. More than anything, he loves to amp up the excitement of any situation and get people on the edge of their seats. He has a skill for getting the audience riled up about battles and tournaments, knowing just the right words to say to get them invested. Highly observant, he can notice any unique detail and make it seem thrilling.

Yuga Aoyama – ISFP

“Unless we can face that which pains us…we can never truly sparkle!” – Yuga Aoyama

While Aoyama commands a lot of attention at the beginning of MHA, as the series continues we see that his confidence and flamboyance are often a cover for insecurities about his Quirk. Aoyama often keeps to himself, quietly observing his teammates and analyzing them. He’s quick to pick up on similarities between himself and Deku and also quick to notice the sparks of chemistry between Deku and Ochaco. It’s crucial for Aoyama to find his place at UA high, and to become the hero he always dreamed of being. As an SP he’s able to stay present in the moment very easily, and as an Introverted Feeling type he’s good at putting himself in other people’s shoes and understanding their experiences by relating them to his own experiences.

Nemuri Kamaya “Midnight” – ESTP

“I’ll take those fluffy, newly-hatched chicks…and whip them into shape my way.” – Nemuri Kamaya

Flirtatious and playful, Nemuri a.k.a. “Midnight” possesses all the charm and enthusiasm that ESTPs are famous for. She’s highly observant and surprisingly intelligent, but that side of her is often overlooked because of her flashy, provocative manner of dressing and behaving. Nemuri enjoys toying with people and getting reactions out of them; something that many tertiary Fe users (ExTPs) admit to, but her motives are usually good. She can think quickly in difficult situations and find tactical solutions and strategies at a moment’s notice. She’s an excellent example of the wit, charm, and cleverness of the ESTP type.

Mirio Togata “LeMillion” – ENFJ

Mirio Togata ENFJ

“I’ll never let him make you sad ever again. Everything’s fine now!!! I’ll be your hero!!!” – Mirio Togata

Inspiring and driven, Mirio Togata does whatever it takes to succeed so that he can help others. Much like All Might (another ENFJ from My Hero Academia), Togata wants to be a symbol of hope for the country he lives in. He often puts others first, pointing out their unique abilities and inspiring them to keep trying when they don’t believe in themselves. His insight about the quality and potential of others and his persuasive, supportive personality makes him a must-watch for anyone trying to understand the ENFJ type.

Nejire Hado – ENFP

“Regretting something and getting frowny doesn’t change things!” – Nejire Hado

Ceaselessly curious and effortlessly kind, Nejire shows great interest in the quirks and features that anyone can bring to the table. She has a passion for novel and unusual things and isn’t afraid to ask very pointed, peculiar questions to people. Enthusiastic and compassionate, she helps Eri (an INFP) to heal from the trauma she’s experienced, simply by playing with her, talking to her, and letting her be a kid again.

Tamaki Amajiki – INFP

Tamaki Amajiki INFP

“What should I do? The words…they won’t come out! No matter how hard I try to think of them (classmates) as potatoes…everything except their heads just keeps its human form…and besides their heads I can only see them as humans!” – Tamaki Amajiki

INFPs don’t often show up as “superheroes” in the film world. That job is usually left to the Sensing-Perceiving types. However, Tamaki Amajiki is a perfect example of an INFP superhero. He doesn’t brag about his abilities or find ways to show off to others. Instead, he modestly uses his skills, following his heart without needing to be in the spotlight. INFPs will relate to his authenticity, compassion, and quiet, idealistic nature.

Mei Hatsume – ENTP

“Failure is the mother of invention, Power-loader sensei. Thomas Edison once said that. Just because a creation doesn’t work as intended doesn’t mean the effort is wasted.” – Mei Hatsume

Ingenious and energetic, Mei Hatsume is able to create highly effective support gadgets in just a short matter of time. Her blunt, assertive demeanor can intimidate her classmates – but she proves her usefulness time and time again with her innovative creations. Like most ENxPs, the process of discovery is more important than the end result for her. She feels no concern about failing, seeing each moment as an opportunity to learn and improve. She also knows how to manipulate and strategize, as she proves when she tricks Tenya Iida into using her support equipment to promote her inventions. Overall, Mei Hatsume showcases the creativity, intelligence, and curiosity that make ENTPs truly shine.

Fumikage Tokoyami  – ISTJ

“He who follows two hares catches neither.” – Fumikage Tokoyami

Dedicated and responsible, Tokoyami will do whatever it takes to live up to the title of hero. Like many ISTJs, Tokoyami is serious and focused, ignoring questions or requests that seem irrelevant or pointless. He has no problem commanding Dark Shadow (his quirk) and coming up with logical courses of action. In typical ISTJ fashion, he also seems traditional in many situations, pointing out that Midnight’s costume “isn’t appropriate” for a high school tournament.

Hitoshi Shinso – INTP

“This is a fight to test the strength of your spirit. If you know what you want for your future, then you can’t worry about appearances.” – Hitoshi Shinso

Mysterious and strategic, Hitoshi has the unique ability to manipulate other people’s minds in order to get them to do his bidding. Unlike many who would use this quirk for evil, Shinso wants to become a great hero. He uses his powers of manipulation and coercion to fight against evil rather than reinforce it. Shinso also shows great powers of deduction, quietly mapping out the motives and triggers of his teammates in order to get them to speak.

Neito Monoma “Phantom Thief” – ENTP

“You can’t be strong by yourself. But I don’t regret having this ability. I can’t walk down a straight path unlike you. I can never be the main hero.” – Neito Monoma

Highly intelligent albeit a little unstable, Neito can create complex strategies on the spot during tournaments. While he can be a bit of a troll, nobody can deny that his intellect is advanced. He takes whatever opportunity he can to mock and challenge anyone in class 1-A, often to support or cheer up his classmates in order to motivate them. Because of his analytical mind, he’s able to formulate a strategy for Class 1-B to get the upper hand in the Obstacle race at the Sports Festival. While some fans might find his mocking, jealous nature annoying, no one can deny that MHA would be far less interesting without him.

Kai Chisaki “Overhaul” – INTJ

“A goal with no plan is called a delusion. You need a plan in order to achieve your goal.” – Kai Chisaki

As the mastermind behind many harrowing battles, Chisaki sees people as pawns to be used towards his end, rather than individuals with feelings. Every move he makes is precisely planned out to be part of a larger “master plan.” He hopes to eradicate Quirks from the world, thus allowing the yakuza to reclaim the power they once held over society. No matter what happens, Chisaki is always thinking of the bigger picture and predicting how things will unfold and affect his plan – allowing himself to improvise and innovate if need be. He also excels in leadership, albeit violently, as he can stay organized and calm in a crisis and factor in the abilities of multiple people in order to plan well-coordinated attacks.

Chizome Akaguro “Hero Killer Stain” – ISFP

“No matter what you want to accomplish, it is necessary to have conviction and desire. Those without it and those who are weak will be weeded out. It’s only natural.” – Chizome Akaguro

Idealistic and driven, Chizome Akaguro will do whatever it takes to have a society free from “false” heroes. Unlike the other villains in MHA, “Stain” has some righteous goals, but he’s warped them and corrupted himself in order to achieve them. He will messy his own hands with blood in order to purge inauthentic heroes who he perceives as only after glory and acclaim. Chizome lives with conviction and refuses to kill without reason. Everything Chizome does relates to his very personal moral code (Fi) and his vision of a purer, more authentic, selfless future.

  1. i have the exact same personality as two of my favorite charter: denki and monoma (don’t judge me)

    1. I’m curious what made you lean more towards ESTP over ENTJ for Bakugo? I see a lot of people type him as ENTJ and trying to type him myself I find myself going back and forth between the two.

    2. What do you mean don’t judge me? I love those characters. I’m a Denki simp. INFJ is my type. Which means that we’d get along pretty well too

  2. I can see how I Ochaka could be an ESFJ instead of an ENFP as originally typed, and how Todoroki can be an ISFP instead of an INTJ. But….
Deku is definitely an ENFP not a INFJ. He acts alot like Hado.
I never would have pegged Shinso as a INTP but it makes sense.
Stain, I pegged him an INFJ which is why he relates so much with All Might.
Denki surprised me, he IS pretty smart but is confusing because he chases girls like an ESFP.
    Good article.

    1. ENFP are bubbly and funny-to-be-around kind of personality,i don’t think Izuku could be an ENFP.He Actually fit INFJ more because He is determined, and very organized (meanwhile ENFP are master procastinators lol),And He is DEFINITELY A INTROVERT(Well INFJ are known for their ambiverted personality because of that people get confused )
